Our Mission
Strength to Walk in Freedom Together (S.W.I.F.T.)was established as a registered charity in 1989. We operate several support groups in the Toronto area, helping participants to cope with depression, stress/anxiety, anger issues, drug and alcohol problems. We do not charge any fees for our services, and the groups are open to anyone in the community. Each meeting is headed by an experienced professional volunteer who specializes in group dynamics. People who attend are given the opportunity to express themselves and be heard by peers who care. We have had much success in helping our participants overcome stress, anxiety, and depression through our unique style of groupwork. Our main source of revenue is a weekly charity bingo session and a few fundraisiers throughout the year. These revenues while helpful,do not come close to providing us with the funds we require to expand our program. Our longterm goal is to develop this group model in other provinces over the next few years.
About STRENGTH TO WALK IN FREEDOM TOGETHER (SWIFT) INC
SWIFT is a peer support group program that utilizes concepts and philosphies based on the teachings of Adler & Perls. We utilize positive peer techniques to effect change and use the model of a modified 'Hot Seat' system to challenge participants' faulty perceptions which may be causing their ongoing issues. Participation in the hot seat segment is voluntary although most are very keen to take part in this exciting model. Our groups are ongoing throughout the year. However, we close annually for three weeks over Christmas and New year. We have a continuous intake and no person is refused help unless the Director feels that individual would be inappropriate for our program for reasons of security or confidentiality. Many stay with the program once they are feeling better, in order to give back to their peers the help and support that they received.
