About STUDIO 180 THEATRE

Studio 180 is a Toronto-based theatre company with the mission to produce socially relevant theatre that provokes public discourse and promotes community engagement. Over the past several years, we have offered a series of Canadian premieres that tackled difficult and divisive issues and generated powerful audience and community responses. Studio 180 began life modestly in March of 2002, when its five co-founders came together with the collective notion of “putting on a show.” Less than a year later, we launched with the acclaimed Canadian premiere of The Laramie Project (2003). Since then, a string of popular and critical successes has helped Studio 180 evolve from an informal artistic collective into a not-for-profit charitable organization with a Board of Directors, General Manager, Director of Development, Marketing Manager, significant producing partnerships, growing base of financial support, and clear and distinctive mission to stage compelling, unique and socially significant drama.

Since 2008/09 (when Toronto’s entertainment weekly, NOW MAGAZINE, named Studio 180 Toronto’s Best Indie Theatre Company), we have produced two large-scale shows per season and developed a program of Beyond the Stage activities to enhance each production with opportunities for public dialogue. We have also created, and now run, an innovative education program (Studio 180 IN CLASS) that takes our work into high school classrooms and a new play initiative (Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT).
