about

Our Mission

The mission of the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal is to perform sacred and secular early music, with a particular focus on choral works composed before 1750. Founded in 1974 by Christopher Jackson, Réjean Poirier et Hélène Dugal, and today conducted by Artistic Director Andrew McAnerney, SMAM is composed of 12 to 18 singers chosen for the remarkable clarity and purity of their voices.  For forty-five years, SMAM has maintained a high standard of excellence and established itself as one of Canada’s finest early music vocal ensembles.

About SMAM

Serving the cultural community on the local scene, as well as being active nationally and internationally since 1974, the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal enjoys an established reputation of excellence for its inspired interpretations of the Renaissance and Baroque vocal repertoire.

Under the direction of organist and harpsichordist Christopher Jackson, the Studio's ensemble is composed of 13 to 18 singers remarkable for the clarity and purity of their voices and instrumentalists playing on period instruments. SMAM won the Montreal Arts Council's 1999 Prize for music, and its recording Heavenly Spheres on the CBC Record label, won the 1999 Félix (ADISQ) in the Classical music, orchestras and large ensembles category.
