Our goal is to educate the public about the wonders of the universe and inspire interest in youth for pursuing STEM careers.
We are amateur astronomers who have worked since 1980 bringing the wonders of the celestial worlds to our small, rural community on the Sunshine Coast of B.C. Through our observatory and numerous regular outreach events, our mandate is to help educate the public about astronomy. We've inspired young people to pursue a career in STEM sciences, helped elderly people with social connections and a way to exercise their brains. We've given numerous telescopes to the local libraries for people to check out and use, and even sent telescopes to aspiring astronomers in Africa. We've taught a young First Nations man who got a telescope from the Make A Wish Foundation how to use his scope. Every time we had a speaker come to give a talk, we took them to his hospital bed to give the talk again just for him. He left us his scope upon his death at a tragically young age. It is at the observatory now in tribute to that remarkable youth. His scope is intended for young people to use to discover a reverence for nature and quicken the thirst for knowledge of the stars. New to the Observatory is the Unistellar Odyssey robotic telescope thanks to a grant by New Horizons. We hope this will enhance the viewing experience of our observatory visitors, especially those in wheelchairs.
