The Sunshine Coast Charitable Housing Society (SCCHS) is a local charity that is dedicated to developing and operating affordable rental housing for hard-working people in sectors such as healthcare, education, industry, transportation, and social services through our partnership with the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS). Through development and innovation, we enable and implement housing solutions that serve the entire Sunshine Coast community.

Our focus is long-term. The housing we build remains affordable for decades, providing stability for workers, families, and seniors while strengthening the community as a whole. Working with government and community partners, SCAHS has created homes that allow people to remain part of the Coast’s social and economic life. 

We’ve already built over 76 rental homes for young families, seniors, and essential service workers. Our goal is to raise $200,000 to build the partnerships, resources, and expertise needed to create 200 affordable rental homes by 2030. 

Beyond building homes, we’re developing programs that address the root causes of housing insecurity and create pathways toward long-term stability. We offer housing solutions and programs that strengthen community capacity, support residents, and encourage local innovation. Through Cover the Coast—a regional collaboration that unites housing partners - we lead several initiatives, including the Citizen Developer program, the Essential Service Workers Rental Registry, the Kitchen Table Collective to help seniors age in place, and the Situation Table, which brings agencies together to support individuals at high risk.

Who Are We?

Established in 2016, the organization began with a passionate group of volunteers sitting around a kitchen table with the shared goal of providing affordable housing. They recognized the need for a local non-profit organization to start building homes that most people can afford. SCAHS has now established itself as a leader in the non-profit housing sector on the Lower Sunshine Coast, with a proven track record of success. 

The society is governed by a board of local community members who volunteered over 4,500 hours of their time last year.

Our Goals

Our Achievements

SCAHS is recognized as a leader in the planning and development of affordable rental housing on the Sunshine Coast. Our success is built on strong partnerships with all levels of government, funders, landowners, builders, and community stakeholders, as well as expertise in pre-development, construction, and financial models.

• Current Housing: We operate 43 affordable rental homes in Gibsons, BC, including both small-scale projects and a large mixed-use apartment building. We have just completed and tenanted a 33-unit rental building with an on-site childcare centre (in progress)..
• Upcoming Projects: In partnership with the District of Sechelt, we are advancing a 23-unit rental apartment with integrated childcare facilities.

SCAHS recently launched the Housing Solutions Hub, a new online platform designed to support practical, community-led housing solutions across the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia. The Housing Solutions Hub brings together local research, housing directories, building regulations, funding opportunities, and step-by-step implementation tools in one accessible place which helps residents, landlords, non-profits, and community partners better understand their housing options and move confidently from idea to action.

1000 STRONG is built on the idea that consistent contributions from many businesses and community members create lasting impact. Monthly funding helps make long-term housing projects possible and demonstrates strong local support when we seek government and partner funding.
