Our mission is to help send children and youth to camp.
These children are from families who experience financial barriers that prevent them from participating in healthy recreation activities.
One in 4 children in Manitoba live below the poverty line which means healthy recreation opportunities are very difficult to access which is why programs like ours are necessary.
About Our Charity
Camp should be one of the most exciting times in a child’s life, yet due to financial barriers so many children in Manitoba are unable to participate.
The Manitoba Camping Association and Sunshine Fund provide over 600 children from financially disadvantaged families the opportunity to experience camp each summer.
The SUNSHINE EFFECT
A small gift has the potential to greatly alter another’s life.
The camp experience is recognized by child development professionals as valuable in helping children mature socially, emotionally, intellectually, morally, and physically.
Research confirms that summer camp experience for young people accounted for significant positive growth in:
• Attitude towards physical activity
• Self-esteem and self confidence
• Emotional intelligence
• Social interaction & citizenship
• Environmental awareness
• Transfer of learning to home and school
“The building blocks of self-esteem are belonging, learning, and contributing. Camps offer unique opportunities for children to succeed in these three vital areas and even beyond home and school.” Michael Popkin, Ph.D., family therapist and founder of Active Parenting.
