Camp Auger

Superior Greenstone Association for Community Living (SGACL) is a non-profit social services agency providing residential and community supports to adults with intellectual disability. We focus on greater independence, social

inclusion, and personal choice. Today, we provide a variety of support models through SGACL which enhance all aspects of community living. Our services include 24-Hour Intensive Support Residences; Community ParticipationSupports and Services; Family Home Program; Supported Independent Living; Group Living; and Outdoor Adventures at Camp Auger. We are passionate about being a part of the community and believe everyone has the right to citizenship and a personally rewarding life.

By restoring Camp Auger, we will not only be providing the SGACL community the chance to share this piece of history with individuals in the community while securing a profit to assist the Association and give them the capacity to expand services to their clients. The vision for Camp Auger is to provide a fully accessible community resort and to promote an inclusive, barrier-free, and educational camping experience that everyone can enjoy. To expand beyond the stigma of serving only those individuals with disabilities, to envision CampAuger benefitting and being accessible to the community as a whole.

Camp Auger is currently a semi-accessible waterfront property, which was donated several years ago, to reduce barriers that those with disabilities face in accessing the wilderness. Therefore, by upgrading, renovating, and creating a fully accessible space for our region, we will be able to offer this to our clients and to all of the Superior-Greenstone communities. Through this project, paths will be widened and paved to allow clients in wheelchairs to explore the surrounding forest. We will also look to upgrade our docks to enable wheelchairs to safely access the water, including a ramp and other renovations that will create easy access for those with physical limitations to experience the joy of swimming in a lake. We support a significantly marginalized population with intellectual and physical challenges, and the upgrades we have planned will lessen and potentially eliminate the barriers our clients face while camping in the wilderness.

SGACL believes that all persons should live in a state of dignity and share in all elements of living in our community. A semi-accessible waterfront property named Camp Auger was donated several years ago to our organization to reduce barriers that those with disabilities face in accessing the wilderness. Due to our inability to generate revenue, and given our constant state of adapting and addressing COVID-19 concerns with our clients, their caregivers, and the community, we have had to put fundraising and overall planning to the side. This property offers ample opportunities to the clients of Superior Greenstone but also the residents of our region. Due to COVID-19, we have not been able to move forward with our plans to upgrading, allowing for complete accessibility additions to be made and thus deliver the programs and services that are necessary for our clients and community. This space will lessen and potentially eliminate our clients' barriers, a significantly marginalized population with intellectual and physical challenges.
