Supporting Survivors of Abuse and Brain Injury through Research (SOAR)

about

Almost half of Canadian women (44%) will experience violence at the hands of a partner in their lifetime. As many as 92% of them may experience a concussion or other brain injury as part of the abuse. That's thousands of Canadian women every year. Yet, despite those numbers, little attention is still paid to this hidden public health crisis.

Supporting Survivors of Abuse and Brain Injury through Research (SOAR) is working to change that. As the only charity in Canada with a singular focus on brain injury (BI) caused by intimate partner violence (IPV), SOAR works to explore the intersection of BI and IPV, educate members of the public and frontline workers who support survivors of IPV, and empower survivors to get the supports and services they need to move into healthy lives free of abuse.

We work with academic researchers, health care providers, and community partners to investigate the intersection of brain injury (BI) and intimate partner violence (IPV), and apply scientific evidence to increase awareness and improve supports and services.

Our mission? To improve the lives of women and gender-diverse survivors of IPV-caused BI through research, education and advocacy.
