Co-Design with Kids - Active Alley

Stepping Towards a Greener Tomorrow takes kids out of the back seat (figuratively and literally) and gets them involved in planning healthy communities. The kids from Calgary Islamic Omar Bin Al-Khattab Campus School (OBK) want to create a Play Street around their school - not just for themselves but for the community at large.

Help us prototype an Active Alley in Meridian!

Meridian is an industrial area in North East Calgary that Calgary Islamic Omar Bin Al-Khattab Campus School (OBK) and more than 500 students call home. OBK is a commuter school. Though some live within walking distance, none of the students walk or bike to get there. With 60% of the neighbourhood covered in parking lots, it wouldn’t be an easy thing to do. Deep “desire lines” throughout Meridian show that people do walk in the area, so the students decided to create a Play Street around the school - not just for themselves but for the community at large.

There are a ton of ways you can contribute - from practical permitting fees to pretty planters. Check it out below:

Planters

Add some greenery to the school street with planters that double as barriers separating people from traffic.

Botany plants lately? You can now!

5$’s buys a lavender plant, 10$’s buys native grass

Paint the pavement

63$ buys one can of paint to make streets pop! [9 total]

Be idle without the Idling

Moveable benches that give folks a place to rest and chat - seats can be moved around to create space for different types of events and gatherings!

Ramps

Ramps for play and events
