SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT NETWORK SOCIETY

about

The Sustainable Environment Network Society (SENS) has been an environmental advocate in the Vernon BC area for over 50 years.

Our mission is to work towards a healthy, sustainable environment for our community.

SENS began as a volunteer group in 1971 when we initiated a paper and glass recycling pilot study. In 1982, we became a registered society under the name “North Okanagan Recycling Society” and ran the recycling depot (one of the first in BC) until this program was privatized and was taken over by the Regional District of the North Okanagan.  Our present name has allowed SENS much more scope to promote environmental care and strengthen the community’s environmental sustainability for us, our children and our grandchildren.

Here are some SENS successes:

  • bike lanes
  • Carpool.ca
  • the one tonne challenge - a greenhouse gases reduction pilot project
  • bringing Katimavik volunteers to Vernon to assist with a variety of community projects.
  • educate the City and the community on Smart Growth principles so that our OCP was as sustainable and environmentally conscious as possible.
  • Blue recycling boxes in local schools
  • an Environmental Trust Fund for scholarships or future initiatives
  • a free monthly newsletter
  • letters of concern on behalf of citizens
  • speaker events
  • Environmental All Candidate Forums
  • a butterfly-bee-friendly pathway from lake to lake through Vernon as well as butterfly-bee-friendly plantings in backyards and boulevards
