Teatro La Quindicina was founded in 1982, by Stewart Lemoine, at the inaugural Edmonton International Fringe Festival to create comedies for Edmonton audiences. From its origins in the production of All These Heels by Stewart Lemoine, the company has grown over 40 years in Edmonton's theatre scene by producing the comedies of Stewart Lemoine, new plays from the company's ensemble of artists, and vintage comedies from the last mid-century. Led by resident playwright and director Stewart Lemoine, the company’s whimsical comedies and grassroots collaborative process have been called “Distinctly Edmonton” (Liz Nichols, Edmonton Journal May 2012) and has earned a fiercely loyal audience base over the course of its 40-year history.
Throughout Teatro’s history they have maintained a commitment to ensemble, working with a core group of artists to develop a creative practice that has resulted in a distinct mid-century aesthetic and definitive literate comedic style. Teatro’s ensemble approach extends beyond the stage and is evident in Teatro’s organizational model, which sees artists involved at every level of operations, from governance to administration.
Teatro endeavours to promote, develop, and hire local talent whenever possible, with the aim to make Edmonton a desirable home base for some of the country’s most talented performers, stage managers and technicians. Teatro does this by consistently providing opportunities for Edmonton artists to work, perform and develop creatively. As a result, Teatro has helped some of Canada's most talented artists make Edmonton their home.
Since 1994, Teatro has been one of the resident theatre companies of the Varscona Theatre in Edmonton's Old Strathcona district, and was among the original companies that created The Varscona Theatre Alliance, along with Shadow Theatre and Die-Nasty.
Teatro La Quindicina celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022 by changing its company name to: Teatro Live! a riot of fun! Then, near the end of 2023, Teatro welcomed their first General Manager, who joined the Teatro team with Stewart Lemoine - who is still the resident playwright after 40 years!
