The Kenya COVID-19 pandemic has had critical socioeconomic impacts on its poor. Restrictions, lockdowns and closures have hit Kenya’s women and children the hardest.

Unemployment has nearly doubled. Working hours and earnings have been drastically cut. Most families relied solely on the income of their small businesses (food or craft stands etc), but due to lockdown restrictions, many of their businesses have closed.

Access to healthcare has become almost impossible. Government hospitals are over run and lack even some basic medicines. This forces people to seek private health clinics. Their high prices are completely out of reach for the poor.

Private schools transitioned to remote learning but public schools could not due to a lack and cost of internet access. For most households, accessing the internet costs more than a day’s pay. Low-income families do not have access to smartphones and computers. Many schools are back in session, but families are struggling to pay even basic term fees.
