Texada is a rural, sparsely populated island of 1200 residents, 54 percent are 60 years and over, 21 percent are are low income. Many live on rural acreages with poor access to health and emergency services. There are no alternative housing options for seniors whose homes are not safe, accessible or adaptable.
Incorporated in 2019, Texada Island Non-profit Seniors Housing Society aka TINSHS is directed by a volunteer working Board, mostly locals. Our mission is to create 20 units of affordable age-friendly housing for Texada seniors, enabling them to age close to family, friends and community. A full timeline of achievements and milestones is available on our website. https://www.texadaseniorshousing.ca
One of the biggest obstacles to building seniors housing on Texada is obtaining Title to buildable land. After much searching, TINSHS has found an eight acre parcel of land, privately owned by Selkirk Mountain Forest Ltd aka SMF within the Gillies Bay Improvement District that is suitable. SMF has agreed to donate eighty percent of the assessed land value - a value of $134,000. Our application to exclude this land from the Agricultural Land Reserve has been successful, with full support from the qathet Regional District and SMF.
Securing title to land is the prerequisite for all predevelopment and construction funding sources in community housing. The generosity of our community has raised the necessary capital to cover land purchase and associated costs.
TINSHS is seeking donations needed to further the process to providing a safe, affordable alternative for our seniors. Be part of this journey. Please donate online or by mail to PO BOX 32, Van Anda, BC V0N 3K0. (During any mail disruptions, consider donating online or via email transfer.)
Reach out to discuss opportunities for partnership and recognition. We thank all our donors for believing in us and our mission of helping Texada residents age well on our beautiful island.
