The Fur-Bearers

about

Our official name is The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals, but we’re known to many as The Fur-Bearers.

Our mission is simple, yet deeply impactful:

1. To protect the environment by preserving both urban and rural ecosystems, and the wildlife that depends on them.

2. To advance public education about wildlife protection and conservation.

3. To end the commercial fur trade and hold the fur farming industry accountable, working with the public and the legal system to expose cruelty and push for meaningful change.

4. To support these goals and help make the world a better place for wildlife.

What We're Working On Right Now

Ending Fur Farming in Canada. Canada still has close to 100 fur farms where animals including minks, foxes, wolves, and lynx are kept captive and killed for their pelts. We developed the documentary "Canadian Fur Farms: Exposed," shining a light on the cruelty, taxpayer subsidies, and public health risks tied to this industry. In November 2025, we took the Quebec government to court alongside Animal Justice, arguing the province is unlawfully allowing fur farming to continue despite its own officials warning since 2022 that conditions on those farms fail to meet animals' basic needs. A November 2025 survey of 1,002 Canadian adults found 78% oppose killing animals for their fur. Your support keeps this fight moving.

Trapping Reform in BC. Every year, pets and wildlife are injured or killed in traps set on publicly accessible land across British Columbia. The BC government is currently reviewing the Wildlife Act, and we are actively engaged in that process, including meeting directly with the provincial minister. A February 2026 Research Co. poll found 74% of British Columbians support updating trapping regulations.

Living With Wildlife. Fur-bearing animals, from coyote pups and bear cubs to beaver families and raccoons, are sharing more space with Canadians than ever before. When encounters with wildlife are negative, the default response is often lethal. Our Living With Wildlife program provides local governments and residents across Canada with free, evidence-based resources and practical tools to resolve wildlife encounters humanely, because when people have the right information, both communities and wildlife can thrive.

The story of The Fur-Bearers is one of deep passion and unwavering commitment to wildlife. Over the years, we've worked tirelessly to protect fur-bearing animals and their habitats, and the journey that brought us here is one we are proud to share. We hope you'll join us as we continue to fight for a future where animals are treated with the respect they deserve.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our work. Every step forward for wildlife is made possible because of caring people like you. Whether you're supporting us with a donation, spreading the word, or simply standing with us in spirit, we're incredibly grateful to have you by our side in this journey to protect animals and their habitats.
