Empire Steam Donkey Repair & Maintenance

Help Rebuild the Sled for the 1916 Empire Steam Donkey

The Museum at Campbell River is proud to care for one of the last operational steam donkeys in North America. Built in 1916 and lovingly restored by volunteers, the Empire Steam Donkey has been a living, working part of our collection since 2004—captivating visitors with the ingenuity and grit of early coastal logging.

Now, this rare machine needs your help. The wooden sled it rests on—built over 20 years ago—is deteriorating. Thanks to volunteer Dave Hamilton and community partners, three yellow cedar logs have already been donated, and work is underway to build a brand-new sled that will carry the donkey safely into the future.

This complex project requires specialized equipment, pest treatment, crane lifts, and careful certification to meet provincial safety standards. We're launching this campaign to help cover these costs and to support the ongoing maintenance of the Steam Donkey for years to come.

Your donation makes a difference. With your help, we can preserve this incredible piece of history—and keep the Empire Steam Donkey steaming for generations to come.
