Peace of Mind COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund

The COVID-19 pandemic is negatively impacting our patients living with type 1 diabetes by devastating their income, security and “peace of mind”. Will you please make an urgent donation to provide emergency assistance?  This will allow our clinical team to continue to provide type 1 diabetes education and support.

Imagine for a moment that your child has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. You wake up multiple times each night to prick their little fingers, desperate to make sure their blood sugars are not falling dangerously low. You’re terrified they won’t wake up.

Every parent who has a child with type 1 diabetes lives with the fear that they are unable to keep their child safe especially overnight. The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre gives patients and families the tools they need to manage this disease day and night. No parent of a child with type 1 will ever feel completely at ease ever again, but through our education and support programs, we will continue to manage this disease together and help provide “peace of mind” until a cure is found.

We would normally host two major fundraising events, our annual gala and golf tournament, that raise funds to support our essential programs like our after-hours urgent care program for newly diagnosed patients and the provision of emergency kits that can save the life of a person suffering from a dangerously low blood sugar. Donor dollars also fund our mental health program, which must continue to operate, especially during times like these as our patients are reaching out to us more than ever. Major events would normally fund the urgent care program which provides the patients with immediate access to our staff (Registered Nurse or Dietitian) 24 hours per day for 7 days per week.

Without events such as our gala and golf tournament we face the real possibility of not having enough money to continue to provide support for our families and patients and new patients.

Due to the strict guidelines to practise social distancing we have already had to make the difficult decision to postpone our gala.  We are hopeful that this crisis will be behind us in the coming months and our golf tournament will proceed without interruption but in this uncertain time, there is no way to know for sure. We must prepare now. Assistance from donors like you can help to ease the burden of lost funds should our major events be cancelled or postponed. We need your help today!

Please help us continue to provide “peace of mind” through essential education and support to the more than 1,800 patients we serve.
