At The Doorway young people, who want to leave "the streets" are supported to build independent and sustainable lives in society.
The young people we support, aged 17-30, face significant challenges—addiction, mental health issues, homelessness, job instability, food insecurity, limited access to education, and social isolation. At The Doorway, we not only offer hope but also practical skills and resources to help them overcome these challenges. We recognize that homelessness is often just a symptom of deeper issues like isolation, low self-worth, and shame. Our focus is on supporting these young adults and helping them build confidence, connections, acceptance, and respect, the foundations needed to help them make meaningful progress toward their goals.
The Doorway shares with participants its proprietary MyPLAN program, a two-year planning process which allows young people to use their self-determination to identify and determine for themselves what they need to do to get off "the streets". This process helps young people identify immediate needs and challenges to plan for longer term change. Through goal setting and sound boarding with volunteers, young people gain the knowledge to actively participate in the change they want to make in their lives. The Doorway is not just about getting young people off "the streets". It is designed as an environment which seeks to discover, understand and communicate the factors which indicate the need for social change in our community -we are the bridge between street and mainstream life.
At The Doorway we believe in building agency -supporting young people as they recognize their strengths, make confident choices, and take meaningful actions towards making change. By nurturing their resilience, critical thinking and adaptability, they are empowered to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and actively shape the future they dream of.
