The Durham Girls’ Choir provides a fun and rewarding choral experience for girls aged 7 to 18, from across Durham Region.
The Durham Girls’ Choir is a charitable organization that relies on government grants and generous contributions from community organizations and individuals to deliver its programs. In its 2021/22 season, chorister membership fees represent only a third of the choir’s operating costs.
The choir offers an encouraging and supportive learning environment designed to provide a fun and rewarding choral experience for girls aged 7 to 18.
The aim is inclusion: no previous musical knowledge is required. Choir members learn as they participate, and all skill levels are welcomed and encouraged. With less social pressure than in a co-ed setting, members are able to push themselves to become better singers and join in group activities with more confidence.
The choir's mandate is to promote an understanding and appreciation of the choral arts, encourage members to develop musicianship, self-esteem and confidence, and help girls and young women establish lasting friendships as they mature into future leaders of their local and global communities.
Founded in 1972, the choir’s 49-year history is studded with honours at home and abroad. Durham Girls' Choir serves the many diverse communities that comprise Durham Region, in Ontario.
