The First Open Heart Society of BC's objectives are to:
- support heart patients and their families,
- purchase heart related specialized medical equipment and education for area hospitals
- operate, and properly staff, the Victoria Heart House which provides subsidized accommodations for the spouses and families of patients undergoing open heart surgery and other cardiovascular procedures at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.
- help fund various cardiac rehabilitation program, such as the 'Take Heart and Breathe Well' program that are offered throughout Vancouver Island
FOHS of BC
The First Open Heart Society Of British Columbia is an independent registered charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the support of open heart surgery patients and their families. The society is not affiliated with, or supported by, any other heart organization.
The 300 member society is comprised of patients who have under-gone open heart surgery, their spouses and other immediate family members, as well as doctors, nurses and other medical staff involved with the open heart surgery program.
The society was formed in 1973 on the initiative of cardiologists and early heart surgery patients to function as a support group for patients awaiting and recovering from heart surgery, and their families. Pre-op and post-op trauma for heart patients about to undergo surgery and their families is eased by talking to those who have also "walked the path".
Victoria Heart House Bed & Breakfast
The Victoria Heart House is designed as a Bed & Breakfast accommodation intended to be your “home away from home” and to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The house provides a friendly, supportive, relaxing and non-smoking atmosphere and is conveniently located a short walking distance to Royal Jubilee Hospital. The house has a large bright living room, dining room and kitchen. There are six bedrooms, each with either a queen, a double or twin beds. Currently, Heart House operates at near capacity, and employees house cleaning staff, and administrative staff to ensure a pleasant and carefree stay during stressful times.
