James Cameron School is a small, independent elementary school for children who have learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
About James Cameron School
James Cameron School is a small, independent elementary school operated on a not-for-profit basis by The Fraser Valley Society for Children with Learning Disabilities. We have a 30+ year track record of success educating children in the Lower Mainland who have learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
Our Donation Request
Many children need the services offered by our school but their families are unable to afford it. We are seeking donations for the "James Cameron School 'I CAN!' Bursary Fund" to support families in financial need. We also gladly accept donations to operate the school. Help us to change "I can't" to "I CAN!" for learning disabled young children.
Our Students
Our students are in Grades 2-7 who were not able to achieve their learning potential in their past educational environments. Many come to James Cameron School after experiencing frustration and failure in their previous schools where their learning needs were not being met. As a result, students often deal with feelings of low self-confidence, frustration and high anxiety when faced with academic tasks.
The words “I can’t” are often heard coming from new students who haven’t been able to trust that they can learn. At James Cameron School, this changes to “I CAN” when they build confidence by successfully engaging in academic tasks. Through personalized learning, and with the support, skill and caring of our highly trained teachers and tutors, our students do learn and achieve success.
The JCS Advantage
James Cameron School offers strong benefits and advantages to our students. These include:
- Small school community with a maximum capacity of 57 students.
- Small classes to allow more one to one support and maximize individual learning.
- Multi-sensory (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) teaching strategies, including using technology.
- A structured school environment with predictable routines, proven methodology, and research-based instructional practice.
- Daily forty-five minute, individual student tutorials, with a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor. Working one to one with their Orton-Gillingham Tutor at their own pace, our students quickly experience success, and this leads to increased confidence, which leads to more success.
- Co-ordinated classes and schedules where all students see their tutors at the same time and never experience the stigma of being ‘pulled out of class’.
- A very dedicated and highly skilled faculty with tremendous knowledge and experience in working with exceptional children.
- Focus on the whole child to foster self-confidence, build skills, and maximize learning and potential.
- Customized Individual Education Plans highlighting each student’s strengths, learning styles and pathways to success.
- Follows the B.C curriculum, but is delivered in an adapted format that best suits the learning styles of our students.
- Serving Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, we are centrally located in west Maple Ridge, near the Golden Ears Bridge.
