about

Help Us Empower New Brunswick Youth to Take Climate Action

For over a fifteen years, The Gaia Project has delivered hands-on programs to thousands of New Brunswick students to provide the skills that prepare them for a cleaner, greener future.

For about $20 a child, you can provide a New Brunswick student access to The Gaia Project programs.

Why does climate change education matter?

The Gaia Project prepares students for a future that will be very different from the past – and even the present. Climate change is reshaping all aspects of young people’s lives and prospects, from potential career paths to their choices as consumers and roles as community members.

We deliver action-oriented programs and hands-projects in French and English in all New Brunswick school districts. Through them, The Gaia Project:

  • Empowers young people to be green-energy innovators

  • Increases climate literacy and energy awareness

  • Fosters 21st-century skills for the knowledge economy

  • Nurtures a sense of agency in students at school, home and in their communities

  • Expands youth’s careers horizons by connecting them to professionals and other organizations

  • Develops youth leaders in environmental stewardship, indigenous perspectives and climate action

  • Inspires New Brunswick youth to think and dream big.

When you support The Gaia Project, you help New Brunswick youth rise to the challenge of a clean and prosperous future.

How do we do it?

Since our founding in 2009, The Gaia Project has emerged as the leading climate-change education organization in New Brunswick. Here’s why.

We Partner.

We don’t do this work alone. We work closely with stakeholders in the private sector, other non-profit organizations, teachers’ associations and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to develop and deliver impactful programming.

In the New Brunswick Environmental Network’s School Sustainability Survey 2021, teachers ranked The Gaia Project as the No. 1 source of environmental education materials.

We Fill Gaps.

The Gaia Project provides students with information and opportunities they wouldn’t get otherwise. Climate change is the defining issue of our time. And yet, most New Brunswick teachers lack the confidence and knowledge to teach it effectively. And the curriculum on this vital subject is outdated or lacking.

That’s where we come in. Our team of professional educators delivers rich, real-world learning opportunities. Plus, we have demonstration equipment, including electric vehicles and energy technology, that schools do not.

We Empower.

Eco-anxiety is at record highs among youth. But research shows that education and action are two of the best ways to reduce feelings of despair and helplessness.

Our hands-on, solutions-oriented programs guide students to find answers themselves, developing their capacity for critical thinking and project management. This builds their confidence to problem-solve creatively and be climate-change leaders in their homes, peer groups and communities.

We Adapt.

When COVID-19 struck, The Gaia Project team launched into action, converting our classroom programs into  Climate Quest, 20-minute curriculum-based activities and videos for every grade level. This shift to online resources has opened up new potential that we continue to explore.

“There are a lot of problems youth are going to need to solve when they leave school. School shouldn’t be preparing for the real world; school should be the real world.”

We Scale.

The Gaia Project’s mission is to deliver meaningful climate-change education to every student in New Brunswick. And we want to go further. Beyond our home province, our profile is rising. Through national awards, media coverage and partnerships, such as our involvement in the Eco-Schools initiative, Gaia is emerging as a leading youth climate-change organization in Canada.
