Church Out Serving is preparing and delivering meals to the most vulnerable residents of Haldimand-Norfolk Counties experiencing food insecurity due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Our aim is to support and encourage housebound seniors, people who are ill or immuno-compromised (due to cancer, ALS, MS), and those facing financial or other hardship. We deliver food to individuals unable to leave their homes to shop for food, prepare meals for themselves and have been distanced from family or other sources of support. This need is urgent and exacerbated by uncertainties in the food supply chain, mass layoffs, economic downturn and widespread fear.
We have mobilized a growing pool of volunteers. Our chefs have food safety certification and prepare both fresh and frozen meals at cooking bees in health inspected kitchens. Meals are delivered directly to homes of local residents referred by The Haldimand-Norfolk Emergency Food Response Hotline, Senior Support Services, Canadian Mental Health Association and other partner agencies. We maintain safe food handling and social distancing protocols.
Also operating as The Gathering Food Centre, we are a community-focused, faith-based registered charity, whose objects and activities have been approved by CRA to “provide food and other basic necessities for individuals and families who are... living in poverty, or experiencing need due to a temporary situation or short term crisis". And "in the event of an emergency, will make food available and cooperate with local disaster relief initiatives".
Church Out Serving believes that access to healthy food is a basic human right. Eating well is not only a life necessity but also a comfort in times of hardship. We are honoured to coordinate this local effort to provide for those in our community unable to provide for themselves.
