Kamala foundation has, since its Alberta registration in 2005, supported
Zachary Barton’s and Shova Devi Magar Barton’s work in Nepal.
In July/2012, we received our charitable status from CRA (registration #82765 0946RR0001).
Kamala’s registered purpose with the Canada Revenue Agency is “To alleviate poverty”.
Kamala has no paid staff and is operated by a two-person executive and board of directors.
Directors regularly visit the projects at their own cost.
The Kamala Foundation was established by the Barton Family in 2005 to support the volunteer work that their son, Zachary had been doing in Nepal since 2003. As a result of his lifelong commitment to working and living in Nepal, Zac has acquired a deeply-rooted understanding of Nepali people and their culture.
Our original focus on grass-roots programming for women and children in prison has expanded to include a broader spectrum of communities. Preventative programs based on the principles of permaculture, embracing appropriate technologies, local solutions and building the capacity of communities to sustainably care for children are at the heart of what the Kamala Foundation does.
The Kamala Foundation’s holistic approach to problems helps the communities it works in to become more resilient to future challenges, creating an environment in which children in Nepal realize their full potential.
In 2010 The Kamala Foundation established Nepal’s first Sustainable Children's Home which grows its own food, produces its own energy and generates its own income allowing it to sustainably care for children. In 2016 we established a second home.
Our Food Security program provides organic sustainably-grown food from local farmers and suppliers for over 140 children through our partner Prisoners Assistance Nepal.
The Kamala Foundation operates Seed Saving programs in three villages with over 100 varieties of organic and open-pollinated fruit, vegetable, legume and grain seeds.
Almost Heaven Permaculture Farm is a resource, demonstration and research centre which provides local farmers with the training and resources necessary to become more sustainable.
Resilience Through Recovery is a program designed to address the holistic needs of villages affected by the earthquakes. This integrated program focuses on rebuilding, sustainable agriculture, health, capacity building and livelihoods.
Our Youth Media project enables youth to use social media as a tool to share their stories, engage local and international communities and create growth through micro-enterprise.
