Our Mission
KANPE's mission is to accompany Haiti's most underserved rural communities to achieve autonomy.
About THE KANPE FOUNDATION
KANPE, which means "to stand up" in Haitian Creole, is a foundation that supports Haiti's most underserved communities toward autonomy through six pillars: health and nutrition, agroforestry, education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and local infrastructure strengthening.
In the Central Plateau of Haiti, KANPE supports the community of Baille Tourible. Our foundation works with the best local Haitian experts and organizations to help the population identify their needs and find solutions to achieve their goals.
In collaboration with Zanmi Lasante/Partners in Health (PIH), we support a local medical clinic that provides free healthcare to more than 20,000 residents. To facilitate access to quality education, we also work with the organization Summits Education to provide free education to over 500 primary and secondary school students. With our partner Mouvement Papaye Papaye (MPP), we support nearly 850 farmers to increase food security and sovereignty. In order to ensure sustainability, all agroforestry projects are planned and executed with climate change resilience and emergency preparedness in mind.
We also work with the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs in Baille Tourible to increase economic opportunities. In addition to the partners mentioned, we support an association of local leaders, two farmers' organizations, three women's associations, and two youth associations. We also support a musical band of about 50 young people and have implemented a summer camp to teach young people new skills.
As a foundation, we ensure that funds are properly distributed and that projects are carried out with respect for the community's goals and according to strict norms of good governance and transparency.
KANPE was founded in 2010 by two Canadians, members of the Haitian diaspora: political figure Dominique Anglade and Arcade Fire co-leader Régine Chassagne. The KANPE Foundation is registered as a Charity in the United States and in Canada.
