An artist-run centre actively aiming to foster critical thought through the presentation of contemporary art in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Khyber Centre for the Arts is a queer-led, artist-run centre located in downtown Halifax (Kjipuktuk, unceded Mi’kmaq territory). Since 1995, the Khyber has supported non-commercial, experimental, and community-driven art, providing a vital platform for artists to take risks, share ideas, and connect with the public.
We present exhibitions, performances, screenings, workshops, talks, and artist residencies year-round. Our programming spans visual art, sound, performance, video, sculpture, and interdisciplinary practices, featuring local, national, and international artists. We are a not-for-profit charitable organization that pays fees to artists according to CARFAC standards in our primary program.
Your donation directly supports:
- - Artist fees and honorariums
- - Public programming and community events (up to 60 per year)
- - Exhibitions and installations
- - Artist residencies and studio access
- - Essential operating costs that keep our space accessible and active
You can choose to make a one-time or monthly donation. All donations receive a charitable tax receipt.
Every gift helps us continue to challenge exclusion, disrupt power imbalances in the arts, and sustain an inclusive, experimental space for artists and audiences alike.
Thank you for supporting artists and artist-run culture at the Khyber.
You have the option to contribute by donating to our day-to-day operations, or you can directly support one of the following avenues of public programming:
Events: From thought-provoking concerts and workshops to captivating screenings and engaging panel discussions, the Khyber hosts up to 60 public events each year. By supporting our events program, you directly enable us to professionally compensate artists, bolster partnerships, maintain our facilities, perform necessary repairs, and invest in equipment, ensuring that our programming remains dynamic, accessible, and impactful for all.
Exhibitions: At the Khyber, we showcase a dynamic array of artistic expressions spanning performance, painting, drawing, photography, video, audio, and sculpture. Exhibitions feature local, national, and international artists, and your support will directly fund artist fees, artwork transportation, artist travel, publicity efforts, and installation costs, ensuring that vibrant creativity continues to thrive within our walls.
Residencies: Our artist residencies, ranging from 1-3 months, alongside weeklong artist studios, provide invaluable opportunities for creative exploration. With 24-hour studio access and public presentations, your donation will contribute to artist fees for community engagements, as well as essential studio materials, fostering an environment where innovation knows no bounds.
