Young people with kidney disease face unique challenges due to their age and the impact of chronic illness on their lives. These include disruption to their growth, education and social development. Matters are more complex when adolescent patients transfer to adult healthcare.
This December 1st you can help these young patients by supporting The Kidney Foundation of Canada’s programs and services. Help them conquer their most difficult days and maintain a positive outlook despite the challenges and obstacles faced daily with kidney disease.
Giving Tuesday comes this year amid the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kidney and transplant patients, including children and young adults, are at higher risk of developing a severe form of COVID-19 due to their compromised immune system.
COVID-19 presents challenges for the management of children’s renal diseases, especially those receiving long-term immunosuppressive medications. Renal transplant recipients and those with chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury requiring dialysis are particularly at risk.
As a result, young kidney patients and their families face more isolation, anxiety, fear, and depression compared with the general population.
