The Booker School nurtures curiosity, courage, and community through IB-inspired, inquiry-based learning in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley.
The Booker School is a Pre-Primary to Grade 8 school situated in Nova Scotia’s beautiful Annapolis Valley. Our learning is IB-inspired, inquiry-based, and concept-driven. The school campus is situated in the beautiful village of Port Williams, in a Georgian-style building on nearly 5 acres of diverse land. Our slice of the Annapolis Valley offers a wonderful outdoor education for our students to complement what is happening within our walls.
The Booker School is inspired by, and working towards, becoming accredited by the International Baccalaureate. Our school firmly believes in inquiry as the vehicle for learning through a concept-driven curriculum that embraces individual learners and real world issues. At The Booker School, we believe that this curriculum and style of learning can be embraced by all and offers a chance for the local community to democratize education.
We believe in providing opportunities for students to challenge themselves, develop a love of learning, and acquire the skills to become successful members of society. Action and service learning are key components of our educational model. We promote sustainable choices and have policies in regards to food waste and sourcing at lunch breaks. We are members of Green Schools Nova Scotia, a group that promotes sustainable education across the province. We also incorporate the Global Goals for Sustainable Development into our curriculum, making our learning significant, meaningful, and relevant for every student.
Throughout the school year, each class goes through six units of transdisciplinary learning, exploring themes such as Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, and How the World Works. Core subjects such as literacy and mathematics are interwoven within the units of inquiry for students to see the purpose and make practical use of the skills they are developing. Students are given voice, choice, and responsibility in balance with structure and support to help them become successful members of our society. The structure of our Program of Inquiry ensures that students develop skills and conceptual understanding as they progress through the grades.
As a small school with small class sizes, and an enthusiastic faculty, we are a family. Our beautiful campus houses our learning in a home setting, with access to local environmental features such as the Acadian dykes system, forests, marshland, and our campus gardens. Our students interact with one another across the grades, with older peers often acting as role models and leaders for the younger ones. We have an experienced faculty of enthusiastic, caring teachers who are here to encourage a love of learning in our students.
The Booker School offers an opportunity for students to realize their full potential and support others in achieving the same. Our aim is to become a part of the wider community - both here in the Annapolis Valley - and beyond. By interacting with local businesses, being involved in community events and connecting with others, our school aims to grow its community and embrace the area in which we live.
