Our Mission
The New City Institute is a registered federal charity that undertakes research and public education on:
• structuring the built environment to minimize impacts on the natural environment;
• harnessing social change processes to encourage the development of more sustainable communities;
• improving planning theory and practice;
• fostering public participation and a culture of civic engagement.
Recently, New City has acted as an incubator, providing guidance and a funding vehicle for the creation of the Smart Growth Canada Network. The Real Estate Foundation was one of the funders of this initiative, as was Natural Resources Canada. About THE NEW CITY INSTITUTE
The New City Institute was established in 1996-97 to replace New City magazine. Its predecessor, City magazine, founded in 1974, offered for many years the only in-depth alternative perspective on urban planning, housing, citizen participation, and sustainability issues in Canada.
