The Nicola Valley Food Bank has proudly served our community for 28 years and are now proud to be accreditted through Food Banks Canada. We initially focused on providing food hampers, we have evolved to meet the growing and changing needs of our clients. Client demand at the NVFB has been significantly impacted by the rising cost of living, increasing the number of families seeking our assistance. Our clients are our neighbours. We proudly serve a diverse range of clients, including families, children, seniors, low-income workers, newcomers to Canada, individuals with disabilities, and people in between employment. Whatever the reason is if they have the courage to come through our door to ask for help, we are here to welcome them with dignity.
Our mission is to support all those in need, ensuring that no one goes hungry during these challenging times. In 2025, food bank usage increased by approximately 20% compared to provided vital support in our community, serving 708 unique households and 1294 unique individuals. Our duplicated numbers are: 7640 households and 14021 individuals. Until recently we offered a monthly hamper program, providing essential staples such as canned goods, pasta, crackers, and school snacks for children. Due to increase for the need of support and the decrease of donations we have had to change to a shopping choice model. In addition, we recognize the need for consistent nutrition and offer weekly top-ups during non-hamper weeks. These top-ups include fresh and perishable items such as protein, vegetables, eggs, bread, margarine, milk for children, and protein drinks for clients facing health challenges. Our food bank serves clients facing hardship, including single parents battling cancer and families with growing children. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we actively participate in food recovery through a zero-waste initiative. This allows us to redistribute food to other organizations that provide outreach and meals within the community. We also offer hygiene program, which provides essential items such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dish soap, household cleaners, toilet paper, adult incontinence products, and feminine hygiene products.
Along with the costs of food purchases that we make to keep our shelves stocked, we also have operating costs such as, but not limited to rent, hydro, fuel and portioning product.
We are deeply grateful for the generosity that helps us provide nutritious food and keep our doors open to neighbours who need a hand up.
