Business Number: 108082363RR0001

39,000 people turn to a food bank in Ottawa every month.

Sadly, 37% of those who need emergency food are children.

The Ottawa Food Bank is the charity responsible for the collection and distribution of food to all the major food banks and emergency food programs in Ottawa. Working with 116 agencies across the city, we are the central voice and organizer for emergency food in Ottawa.

Your gift will make sure food is available for hungry people in their greatest times of need.

You will provide food to 116 agencies including:

  • Food banks across the city

  • Meal programs, including downtown shelters

  • 22 after-school programs

  • 18 summer lunch programs
  • Your gift will also provide essential baby items, like formula, diapers and baby food, to new parents and their babies.

Your donation will provide nutritious food to families and individuals across the city.

Because we purchase food items in such large quantities and have amazing food industry partners and donors, we are able to turn every dollar donated into about $5 worth of food delivered to the community.

About Our Charity

The Ottawa Food Bank has been providing food to those in need since 1984. We work with 116 agencies to provide food and support to over 39,000 people in Ottawa every month.

Agencies include shelters, community food banks, and meal programs right across the national capital region. The Ottawa Food Bank also provides food to after-school programs and summer day camp lunches as well as providing basic baby supplies, such as diapers and formula to mothers. Sadly, 37% of the people we serve are children.

Low income coupled with fixed expenses like rent and utilities leave little left for good food. The result is skipped meals or buying cheaper, less nutritious foods. The cycle ultimately leads to food insecurity, followed by difficulty learning or working, poor mental health and increased risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Healthy food is a top priority for the Ottawa Food Bank. Our focus is on continually looking to increase the amount of nourishing, wholesome food we provide to our neighbors who need a helping hand. Our goal is to ensure that all food we acquire, purchase and deliver is of the best quality and nutritional value. Our neighbours deserve that.

Food recovery is an important program for the Ottawa Food Bank. Every week, we pick up high quality, surplus food from 26 grocery store partners. We receive thousands of pounds of fresh food, including dairy, produce, baked goods, and frozen meat. Last year, we collected over 2 million pounds of surplus food that was delivered to our partners, which is good for the community and the environment.

The Ottawa Food Bank is committed to having a significant portion of the food we distribute be fresh. We work with local grocers and restaurants to collect and distribute fresh food, including meat, dairy, bread, and other items. We also have farmland where, each year, we grow over 130,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit that are distributed.

Many people don’t realize that the Ottawa Food Bank spends over $1.6 million a year to purchase food to ensure we are able to keep up with demand and ensure we are providing a variety of nutritious and balanced food options.

Because we purchase food items in such large quantities and have amazing food industry partners and donors, we are able to turn every dollar donated into about $5 worth of food delivered to the community.

The Ottawa Food Bank is dedicated to feeding those who are hungry in our city. With just 2.5% of funding from government sources, the Ottawa Food Bank is truly by the community and for the community.
