The People's Pantry Food Recovery Society seeks to relieve poverty and reduce food waste by collecting surplus food from food retailers, growers, and manufacturers facing excess food waste and by providing this food to people, primarily seniors, single parents, and at-risk youth located in the Tri-Cities (BC) who are facing food insecurity. Additionally, we seek to educate our community about food waste so that together we can reduce the amount of nutritious, healthy food that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Our Healthy Hampers program began at the height of the pandemic in 2020. Each week, our volunteers collect over 2000 lbs of recovered food and we feed over 250 individuals each week with hampers (directly and indirectly through other agency support) that include fresh produce, dairy, bakery, and protein options. On average, our hampers weigh between 35-50 lbs each and we tailor the food we provide to each families' dietary and cultural requirements.
