For over 100 years, The Salvation Army has been providing practical assistance to people in Thunder Bay. The Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre on Cumberland St. offers residential supports in a safe and caring environment. Services include an emergency shelter for men experiencing homelessness, a permanent supportive home for men with significant mental illness, a half-way house for men transitioning from correctional facilities back into the community, and transitional housing through the Journey to Life Program. Caseworkers help residents to identify needs, set goals, provide programming, and assist in accessing services so that residents will be able to have their best life possible knowing that this will look different for each person.
Families and individuals living in the community are supported through other programs. Our food bank provides hampers to about 300 households a month. Our Soup Van Mobile Meal Program provides a meal to 100 – 250 people each evening. A breakfast and nutritional snacks are provided daily for the students at St. James School, and cooking classes help participants to develop their skills and learn to stretch their food budget.
Our goal is to help those we serve reach their full potential.
