Mission Statement:The Themba Development Project works at the community level to empower the residents to take charge of their own development. Through a community-led development approach we work to address poverty, food security, skills development, education and HIV/AIDS.
Information:The Themba Development Project is a Canadian-South African Registered Non-Profit organization which works with people in Nqiningana, South Africa to break the cycle of poverty. Our work focuses on empowering people, connecting communities with resources, tools and knowledge, improving access to food, minimizing poverty, and encouraging education.
Our focus for 2017 is to help communities to overcome water and food shortages, while supporting strong education initiatives. This year we launch the Bethuna library project which will be a community learning centre to help our commubuty overcome challenges due to limited education opportunities. Our goal is to fill this space with books, magazines and one day introduce a computer literacy program. The library will also serve as a safe space for youth and women groups to meet and discuss community issues.
We continue to build up the agriculture and irrigation infrastructure to increase food security by provider easier access to nutritious foods. Irrigation projects help cushion the effects of drought.
We continue to support families and communities who are struggling with very high rates of HIV/AIDS because our work takes place in areas with 20% and higher HIV/AIDS prevalence. In special cases we match families with sponsors to help increase their ability to cope with hunger and educational challenges such as high costs of transportation to schools. This program focuses on families headed by grandmothers who are caring for orphaned or vulnerable children..
All of our projects employ people in our village to offset the very high rate of unemployment 80%+). Our projects are community-led and we utilize local knowledge to ensure that projects are sustainable.
