The Royal Commonwealth Society Vancouver Island (RCS VI) is an integral part of the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS). Our mission is to create civic involvement & activities to improve the lives and prospects of Commonwealth citizens locally & globally. RCS VI strives to network, inspire, and educate about the responsibility of Commonwealth citizens by promoting the Commonwealth Charter (signed by Queen Elizabeth II, March 13, 2013). The modern Royal Commonwealth Society Vancouver Island further promotes the ways, the wonders, and the wisdom of Reciprocity, Conviviality, and Sustainability.
WHAT DOES RCS VI DESIRE TO ACCOMPLISH?
- In the current 2025 season, RCS VI has international outreach in facilitating funds currently being raised to build a Boys Dormitory at the remote Mwahu Secondary School in Tanzania.
- RCS VI continues to be engaged with a "Trees for Life" theme. As part of this theme, RCS VI explores opportunities to enhance urban and rural settings by sponsoring the planting & nurturing care of trees.
- Encourage Commonwealth education, discussion, and exchange of Commonwealth news among citizens of all ages...with focused emphasis on youth.
- Engage & enable children & youth to participate in activities to learn about, and experience the ways of consensus making and to encourage education about the Modern Commonwealth.
- Engage career persons & young professionals, encouraging them to include the "Commonwealth Perspective" in their development as Modern Commonwealth citizens.
WHAT METHODS DOES RCS VI USE TO FACILITATE THE GOALS?
- A bi-monthly RCS VI CIRCULAR newsletter is sent out via MailChimp
- In 2024 & 2025, RCS VI is facilitating some fundraising for a Boys Dormitory to be built in Tanzania. This project is known as the Mwahu Project, and is connected with the Canadian Harambee Society. Tanzania is a Commonwealth country. This facilitation by RCS VI is an example of Commonwealth international partnership to further education in this Commonwealth country.
- In 2023, a specific focus project was with Music for Veterans Project 2023. This focus of honouring veterans is ongowing. Learn more about this Commonwealth related project here.
- RCS VI has an Education Legacy Fund (ELF) which is held & administered by the Victoria Foundation. The revenue from this fund is designated for Commonwealth education purposes.
- RCS VI partners with local Vancouver Island organizations, businesses and individuals who value the same principles.
- RCS VI uses social networking platforms of Facebook @rcsvibc and Instagram at rcsv.i
- RCS VI promotes the Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition for young writers each year.
- RCS VI promotes the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy(QCC) through tree planting projects, and further, works to raise awareness about the Blue Charter which is the Commonwealth Oceans research platform.
