In addition to the families we will be sponsoring, we have become aware of many others who will be coming into our neighbourhoods both downtown and in the east end.  For this reason, we are working to create a new Settlement Worker position, in order to coordinate support for this influx of refugee families into our community. This position will coordinate volunteer and staff delivered services, link to other services and programs in our communities and insure our refugee families are well supported as they settle into their new homes.  Our goal is $60,000.  In addition to private donations, we will be appealing to foundations as well as our current funders. Thank you!  We have now surpassed our goal of $150,000, thanks to a pledge from our downtown neighbours, the Cabbagetown Neighbourhood Association for Syrian Refugee Assistance. These additional funds will be going to support an LGBT family, recognizing that this is a group at high risk and that we have a strong community to support them.  

We have been overwhelmed with the strong support from the community, both individuals and groups like the Danforth East Community Association and the Cabbagetown NAASRA.  What a welcome for the refugee families who will come to us in the coming months!

Over 11 million victims of the unrelenting conflict in Syria are either fleeing from daily terror, huddled in overcrowded refugee camps or giving everything they own to human smugglers who promise to ferry them to safety in Europe. Sadly, those promises are often false, ending in tragic loss of life or simply loss of hope.

Friends of The Neighbourhood Group is a group of volunteers, staff and friends who have joined with The Neighbourhood Group to sponsor Syrian refugees in the current crisis.

The Neighbourhood Group is in a unique position to make a difference in people’s lives every day. It is a recent amalgamation of Central Neighbourhood House and Neighbourhood Link Support Services, two organizations with long traditions of supporting people who have come to Canada to escape famine, war and corruption in all corners of the world.

As a not-for-profit agency we provide a wide range of programs and services in Toronto’s downtown and east end. And by working with Lifeline Syria we will ensure we have the best chance of success in quickly bringing refugee families to safety in Canada

Sponsoring a refugee family means we will raise enough money to help them with basic needs for a year and support them in their efforts to settle in Canada; immigration processes, language training, school for the children, employment training, housing and social integration. 

Staff, Board members and our neighbours are being asked to help us by becoming part of that support team or donating money, for which we issue a tax deductible receipt.   

Every dollar you donate to this project will go directly to supporting the basic needs of our sponsored refugee families in their first year in Canada.  No money will be diverted to administration or general programs.
