The Thomas More Institute is a secular non-profit academic institution offering university-level courses to adults of all ages.
TMI's Mission
Founded in 1945, the Thomas More Institute’s (TMI) mission is to foster and encourage adult education by creating and providing accessible university-level courses in the liberal arts to adults of all ages.
The TMI Difference
TMI’s core value is curiosity. We practise a unique learning method that promotes discovery, freedom of expression and lifelong intellectual growth, all within a collaborative community. This approach is based on our belief that people learn best by listening, asking questions and engaging in open debate in an environment where all perspectives are welcome. This process of shared inquiry is guided by a team of highly qualified leaders who volunteer their time to design and lead over 40 new courses each year. To complement our academic program and build community, we also organize a series of cultural and community events throughout the year.
Studies for Credit
While most TMI participants take courses for pleasure, intellectual stimulation and personal growth, students also have the option of working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree offered through TMI's affiliation with Bishop’s University.
Students can also pursue a TMI Comprehensive Certificate by developing and completing, under the supervision of an adviser, an individually tailored program of studies that explores a topic from a variety of perspectives.
Bursaries are available for students facing financial barriers to pursuing their education and for students of exceptional academic talent.
Seniors Outreach Program
Each year, TMI develops and delivers an original 18-week discussion course designed specifically for seniors. Led by volunteers trained in TMI’s approach to discussion, the course is offered on-site at some 15 residences and seniors’ centres in the Greater Montreal area. The goal of the TMI’s Seniors Outreach Program is to foster socialization and intellectual reflection by creating a welcoming environment in which participating seniors can engage with selected readings and with one another.
