The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir champions the choral music experience through live performances, education, and outreach programs; building and enriching communities through a profound emotional experience of the choral masterworks of the world.
About TORONTO MENDELSSOHN CHOIR
The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir has been a champion of choral music in Canada since 1894. As Canada’s leading symphonic choir, and a pioneering force behind the development of our country’s rich choral landscape, we have been fortunate enough to witness and participate in many important events in Canada’s musical heritage.
From the opening of Massey Hall in 1894 to the first choral concert at Koerner Hall in 2009, from the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976 and Vancouver in 2010, to the beginning of the Messiah dynasty with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1931, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir has proudly represented our nation’s greatest achievement in choral music. Remarkably, the TMC has worked under the leadership of just seven artistic directors over 123 years, each of whom holds a place as a great champion of Canadian choral art.
Over 115 experienced volunteer choristers form the backbone of the TMC’s choral community. Twenty professional choral singers provide musical leadership within the Choir, and the TMC is also joined by young apprentice members who, through the TMC’s educational programming, are given the opportunity to sing with the Choir. The TMC is deeply committed to diversity within its community, and attracts choristers from all ethnicities, backgrounds and ages - 36% of current choristers are under the age of 35.
In addition to our own subscription performances, the TMC maintains an enduring musical partnership with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and sings regularly with other performing arts organizations. In all, TMC choristers present over 20 major performances each year. The TMC’s grand symphonic sound and clarity of expression creates an emotional, expansive and visceral experience for each of our listeners.
In addition to a full performance schedule, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir invests in choral music education, outreach and advocacy with a focus on areas where we can have maximum impact. For more information about the Choir, please visit www.tmchoir.org.
Since 1894, the TMC has received support from people who are deeply committed to choral music in Canada. Performing revenue and concert sponsorships cover approximately 39 percent of the cost of our performances, education and outreach programs. Now, more than ever, we rely on personal donations to help us make up the difference.
