Unicamp of Ontario

about

Unicamp of Ontario is an campground based on Unitarian Universalism that serves all regardless of faith.  Its intergenerational community in an outdoor environment allows for personal and spiritual growth. Our campers, participants, and visitors have access to a wide range of programming that is engaging, creative, and uplifting.

During these difficult times, we recognize the worth of an inclusive space in the lives of children and youth and their families. At the heart of Unicamp’s activities are our children’s camp and youth leadership programming, taking place in July, and our family camp, taking place in August. During children’s and youth programs, we use the latest advice from the Ontario Camps Association and our local health unit, as well as resources through our large camp professional network, to run activities that safely allow the participants to build their confidence, resilience, and character.  More importantly, our explorative, playful, and challenging activities allow kids and youth to free themselves  from the stresses that the pandemic has placed on their lives during the off-season. For these few weeks, children and teenagers are allowed to do crafts, enter into discussions around spiritual and social justice matters, and exercise their minds and bodies. Youth, who have been particularly impacted by the pandemic, will be taught skills and tools to maintain their mental health even after they leave Unicamp.

During family camp, facilitators guide campers through activities such as yoga, body movement, and creative spiritual practices. Additionally, we seek to engage people of all ages in practicing environmental justice through education, conservation, and the enhancement of Unicamp’s natural habit. Activities including hikes and educational workshops that aim to promote a love of nature.

We have been focused on renovating Unicamp to be more accessible, so that we are able to offer a space of retreat for those with physical disabilities and mobility issues: in other words, those who aren't often able to enjoy most outdoor spaces.  Renovations this year will allow for better access to our meal service, our firepits, and our beaches - special moments during camping that stay with our participants as cherished memories.

We understand that the Pandemic has impacted Canadians financially, and are utilizing our own resources to ensure access to Unicamp for those who want to join us. As always, Campership Funds are available to pay for up to half of programming fees for any child or youth who applies. We have also created a separate BIPOC Campership Fund, available to those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or as a Person of Colour to come to Unicamp and/or access any of the programming. Sliding scales are being prepared for our activities, as well. While Unicamp has a duty to protect its of financial viability, we also think now is the time to serve the local community in any way possible, as so many have been shaken by this ongoing Pandemic.

Overall, Unicamp seeks to nurture life and leadership skills by offering programs and opportunities to children, youth, and adults. Our staff members are key to building the radically-inclusive community that Unicamp has been known for during its fifty-three years of running. Every staff member is appreciated for the part they play in building our incredible community!
