UJAM inspires creativity, opens young musicians to their imaginations and the world through a mentored, affordable exploration of jazz.
UJAM holds a unique space in the land of music education - its founders and faculty believe in creating a safe space to be fearless. Students - young and mature - thrive when they can fail and grow, their hearts held by a team who believe it takes a whole community to build the next generation of musicians who will thrive anywhere. That's UJAM's special sauce.
Educating young minds is one thing; how you do it is the key… that's how students at UJAM end up feeling so important – from experiencing a kindness and heartfelt desire to pass on information in ways that are nurturing.
People come out of a musical interest but stay because they feel included and supported.
Now the what: UJAM is a not-for-profit society that advocates, mentors, educates, and acts as a resource for the community of jazz listeners and musicians in the Greater Victoria area. As schools struggle to maintain music in the curriculum, UJAM helps to provide education, mentorship and performance opportunities for young and developing artists.
It began in 2004 to build and strengthen the south island jazz community. It now offers amazing, affordable mentorship in all instruments to school-aged youth throughout the year with professional musicians.
All Ages, All Levels!
UJAM encourages listening, playing and learning about jazz at all levels; provides opportunities for like-minded people to meet and learn more about jazz from each other; provides a network and hosts events for jazz musicians of all levels to play and develop; and enables recreational and student musicians to learn from musical mentors.
Young All Stars!
The Young All Star program is a sequential program of development for students between the ages of 12 - 18 years, to study the spontaneous art and craft of improvisation, playing by ear, and performing in a small jazz group.
Our program coordinators, Louis Rudner and Ashley Wey, both very talented musicians and instructors, have built a great program of keen young musicians, learning to improvise, understand music theory and harmony, and playing in a jazz combo. Scholarships and Bursaries are available to deserving students.
