Preserving wild places for wild things... and speaking up for nature. We acquire, restore and steward ecologically precious areas.
We save wild places for wild things, and we speak up for nature. Join us in this important work! The Valhalla Foundation for Ecology is a registered charity and ecological-conservation land trust. Your support helps restore and steward several nature preserves in BC that protect endangered species.
- Snk'mip Marsh Sanctuary: We raised the funds to acquire and steward this very rare type of forested-wetland habitat in the Slocan Valley region of BC. We have now completed a massive restoration project there, documented in a film: Snk'mip Dig Deeper.
- We are proud of our work to restore this marsh to full ecological functioning. The sanctuary is open to the public for the quiet appreciation of nature and we frequently host environmental-education school groups as well.
- We steward a sizeable nature preserve along Elkin Creek in BC’s Chilcotin region. This sanctuary contains grasslands, wetlands, and salmon-spawning habitat. It supports wolves, grizzly and black bears, wild horses, and a number of species at risk. A small homestead cabin on the property serves as a research centre for wolf, grizzly bear, and wild horse researchers.
- In partnership with another land trust we raised the funds to purchase 160 acres of private land along Slocan Lake in the Kootenay region of BC. This land, a private in-holding parcel within the boundaries of Valhalla Provincial Park, was threatened by waterfront development.
- The area, dubbed the “Valhalla Mile” for its mile of lake frontage on Slocan Lake, was acquired and subsequently donated to BC Parks with a strong conservation covenant. It is now part of Valhalla Provincial Park, wild and undeveloped, open for all to enjoy.
- We partnered with BC Parks to purchase and extinguish a trap-line on the east side of Goat Range Provincial Park and establish the area as a permanent fur-bearer reserve.
- We own and steward a waterfront beach area in Silverton, BC called “Colleen’s Beach Park” in honour of the memory of renowned environmental activist and former Valhalla Foundation director Colleen McCrory, who lived nearby.
- At this time we operate only in the province of BC.
- Incorporated in 1998 (BN 868475641).
- Our purpose is to acquire and steward vital habitat for environmental protection. The Valhalla Foundation for Ecology fills an important regional niche not covered by the larger land trusts in Canada.
- Our main focus is ecological land conservation and restoration: habitat for the survival of threatened or endangered species.
