Our Mission

VOX was founded in 1985, and its mission is to support research and presentation initiatives as well enable artists, exhibition curators and other researchers to contribute to art experimentation, to reflection and to development of multiple forms of critical discourse around image-making and exhibition practices from the 1960s to the present day.

Its main activity is exhibitions, most often complemented by publications, documentation spaces, film screenings, conferences and online projects. The exhibitions and other artistic events that the centre produces are grounded in long-term work with artists, and often designed as collective projects that encourage discussions and debates about art and contemporary society as well as public meetings with diverse audiences.

VOX is a non-profit organization and a member of the RCAAQ as well as Art actuel 2-22.

About VOX, centre de l'image contemporaine

In the spring of 1985, an artists collective founded Vox Populi, a non-profit organisation devoted to communication and multidisciplinary artistic practices. In 1987, the organisation redefined its mandate to concentrate exclusively on photography. VOX organised the first edition of the Mois de la Photo à Montréal, an international biennial event, in 1989. In 2002, after having organised seven editions of the event, it decided to make the Mois de la Photo à Montréal a separate organisation in order to enable both organisations to focus on expanding their respective fields of activity. In 2004, VOX pursued this goal by moving to Saint-Laurent Boulevard and devoting itself to the image in a broader sense. In 2011, along with Artexte and the RCAAQ (the Québec network of artist-run centres), VOX relocated its operations to Le 2-22, a building in downtown Montréal, becoming the owner of nearly 12,000 square feet of space. In 2012 VOX was recognized as a social economy organization and secured a start-up grant to better structure its national and international presentation activities. In 2013 Art actuel 2-22 (Artexte, RCAAQ and VOX) was shortlisted for the 28th Grand Prix of the Conseil des arts de Montréal for having established a new unifying venue for the contemporary art milieu.
