We believe that every Canadian deserves to know the people behind our nation's uniform, to relate to them as neighbours, friends, and family.
At the War Stories Society, we bring you closer to these incredible individuals through personal stories and authentic connections. We’re here to share the voices and experiences of Canada’s military men and women in a variety of unique ways.
Veteran Writing Workshops
We host free, in-person veterans' writing workshops in Calgary, Edmonton, and Victoria, with a new one launching in Kingston in September 2025. For those in other regions, we offer virtual workshops, ensuring veterans from all across Canada can share their stories. Our anthology, A Mile in Their Boots, is an inspiring collection from our Calgary workshop, available now on our website, and our authors participate in public readings throughout the year.
You can make a lasting impact by sponsoring a workshop, fully or partially, helping to cover the costs of facilitator stipends, workshop materials, and other essential expenses. On average, it costs around $5,000 annually to run one of these transformative workshops, which typically serve 12 to 15 veterans per group.
Whether you contribute a portion or fund a full workshop, your generosity ensures that more veterans can access this vital program, enriching their lives and empowering their voices.
War: In Pieces Exhibit
Through our travelling exhibit, War: In Pieces, we present an intimate look into the lives of service members. This moving collection of stories, each paired with cherished mementos from veterans and their families, allows you to connect with their journeys on a personal level. The stories reveal everyday moments of courage and vulnerability, creating a powerful connection to their experiences. You may be surprised at the everyday resilience and humour woven into these powerful narratives.
"Until today, I never thought of Canadian soldiers as real people with real lives before."

Our exhibits, public readings, and workshops are all offered free of charge, with donations helping us sustain these valuable programs. Your support truly makes a difference.

Every donation helps us to continue supporting Canada’s veterans in sharing their stories with you. Thank you for considering a donation to keep these stories alive.
Warm regards,
Melanie Timmons,
