Serving the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo since 1982, Waypoints (previously Fort McMurray Family Crisis Society), is a social profit organization working to end domestic violence, sexual assault, abuse and homelessness in our region.
Waypoints works to stop these social problems from starting; we work to break the cycle from generation to generation, to arm people with healthy relationship tools, assist those in crisis with emergency and transitional housing, help people access community supports, advocate on their behalf, and provide them with direct support. We help people establish healthy homes, and move through the process of healing.
It is a basic human right for each one of us to have a safe home, and to be able to be an active part of our community without fearing for our safety. Waypoints has a volunteer board of directors, over 50 staff, and it owns and operates three properties: Unity House Emergency Women’s Shelter, The Opportunities for Change Centre and The Compass Affordable Housing.
Prior to our rebirth and rebranding as Waypoints, our clients and donors weren’t always clear about what we do, what we stand for, and who we serve. Our new name is simple and memorable, and demonstrates the many options available to our clients. Inspired by directional signs common throughout the world, the Waypoints logo is clean, professional, and universal in its appeal. It also correlates with the Aboriginal medicine wheel, which represents healing in all areas of the self.
The colours also signify Waypoints areas of service:
- Purple: Domestic violence, homelessness, bullying, stalking and harassment
- Royal blue: Human trafficking
- Teal green: Sexual assault and abuse
