It is estimated that approximately 1 in 5 children and youth in Ontario will experience some form of mental health challenge. Since 2006, there has been a 54% increase in emergency department visits and a 60% increase in hospitalization for children and youth seeking treatment for mental health issues in Ontario. Digital technology and social media have made a long-lasting impact on the ways our young people communicate and connect with their peers. They rely on these tools to keep ‘them in the loop’ 24/7 and for expression, integration, acceptance, and approval. Social media is a comfort zone where many go first, rightly or wrongly, for all their questions. If young people need or are willing to accept support or counselling for any problem, large or small, the choice of technology and social media over traditional resources will continue to make a large impact. As we grow up we all face new challenges, both social and emotional. At WES for Youth Online we’re here to help you build your confidence and strength to tackle the challenges you’re facing so you can become the person you strive to be.
