The Williams Lake Field Naturalists manage (as volunteers) Scout Island Nature Centre in partnership with the City of Williams Lake and the Nature Trust of BC (owners of the Nature Nentre). Over 75% of the club’s volunteer efforts and nearly all of its fundraising have focused on management and support of the Scout Island Nature Centre since 1978.
The goals of the Scout Island Nature Centre are to:
- offer nature education and interpretation to all ages
- conserve the Nature Centre's wildlife habitat, vegetation and other natural values
- provide a natural place for viewing wildlife and plants, facilitated by a system of walking trails
- be a community gathering place for natural history programs, conservation discussions, natural history research, and ideas and actions for ecological sustainability
The Nature Centre:
- Provides K-12, school programs focused on natural history for 5000 students/year
- Provides Community Nature Programs for all ages all year
- Maintains a Nature House with live and static displays
- Maintains Trails (6km) and wildlife viewing available year round
- Supports Environment Clubs at high schools including outdoor adventures and guidance on stewardship projects
- Leads development of local trail building and enhancement including pamphlets and books highlighting natural history of the area
- Supports Nature Kindergarten (part of SD 27) that is located at the Nature Centre
- Supports two Grade 7 Outdoor Education Classes
- Provides Air quality education and information for the community
- Provides Stream to Sea Education and a three day outdoor Salmon Trip for senior students
