SUMMIT YOUTH CENTRE

Walk through the doors of the Summit Youth Centre and you may just wish you were between the ages of 12 - 18.  In amongst the energized, caring staff you will see a kitchen, a cozy living room, board games area, pool and foosball tables, computer video games, musical equipment and did I mention the newest Virtual Reality Space.  We are a safe, inclusive, substance free zone where youth have opportunities to relax, socialize, learn a new skill or find their strengths.

The experiences with the Virtual Reality area can inspire youth to face fears, create 3D paintings, a basketball net and shooting hoops or travel to museums and parts of the world beyond.  It is more than just a game, it is a world beyond imagination.

Youth Centre's matter, by providing an afterschool program where youth feel safe and providing a resource that proactively reduces risk factors leading to high-risk behaviours. When necessary and accepted the skilled youth workers offer referrals to outside sources.  According to a a study completed in 2006 by Youth Centres Canada youth in smaller towns are at a higher risk to engage in high-risk activities as there are less opportunities for youth. And that is what it's all about.  OPTIONS.

Our DJ'ing equipment has allowed more reserved youth to experience increased social skills and being outside their comfort zone thus having a very positive effect on self-esteem.  Other youth may wish to play some beats or riffs on the electronic drums or guitars.  An electronic keyboard is soon to be added to the mix.  Impromptu dances and karaoke provide additional opportunities to leave the teenage angst in the box. Thursdays are generally focused on our cooking program.  Offering insight into basic skills for budgeting, shopping, preparing and serving a healthy simple meal. Each day there is a combination of activities and programs that makes the Summit Youth Centre Hub much more than a "drop in centre".  All youth are welcome and membership is free.

The Windermere Valley Youth Centre is a registered member of the Youth Centres of Canada.  We are grateful for the ongoing financial support from the Government of British Columbia, and the United Way of East Kootenay.

Without the support of the District of Invermere and citizens the wonderful location and space would not be possible. Thank you for your investment in the youth.

Thank you for being a part of our story.
