Global Food Crisis

As a member of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, World Renew joins the Humanitarian Coalition in its fight against hunger amid the growing global food crisis. Until July 17th, all donations will be matched dollar for dollar by the Government of Canada.

The escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict triggered surging food prices around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions in food production, supply and distribution that resulted in the number of people struggling with hunger globally to double to 276 million.

Ukraine and Russia are major suppliers of wheat, oil and maize, as well as fertilizers used in agricultural production; the intensified hostilities have fuelled the rising cost of these commodities putting severe strain on the already-struggling economies of countries in the Global South. In early March 2022, the United Nations warned of a potential food crisis with global implications.

In South Sudan, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Somalia, where World Renew continues to support families displaced by conflict, already dangerous levels of food insecurity have gotten worse. We are appealing for your support so we can quickly respond to emerging food needs as the soaring prices of key staple crops continue to take a toll on the world’s most vulnerable.
