Global Hunger Response

Nearly 50 million people are at risk of starvation without urgent, life-saving assistance.

Global hunger increased in 2020 by 25 per cent, reversing decades of decline. This was the combined impact of various conflicts, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic. As of April 2022, the World Food Programme now estimates that nearly half of all deaths among children under five are caused by hunger.
"A global crisis of epic proportions has arisen from a deadly cocktail of COVID-19, conflict and climate change — pushing 45 million people in 43 countries to the edge of starvation without urgent life-saving assistance," says Michael Messenger, President and CEO of World Vision Canada. "This number is projected to jump to 49 million by September. We must respond and we must sound an alarm loudly."

The hunger crisis is on track to dramatically worsen because Ukraine, among the world’s largest exporters of wheat, is mired in conflict.

You can make a positive difference right now by supporting World Vision’s Global Hunger Response. This effort to reach 22 million people facing starvation in 25 countries can prevent the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of children. Action includes things like:

  • Providing food and cash assistance.
  • Meeting health; nutrition; water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); and social protection needs.
  • Advocating for more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems.
