The YW Kitchener-Waterloo has seen an increase in need for shelter beds and a safe place to flee abuse amid the spread of COVID-19.
As families find themselves self-isolating and job losses increase, domestic violence rates continue to climb. Women and their children are now at greater risk of violence and homelessness. Our shelter provides relief and basic needs for single women, transgender women and men, non-binary people and their children. We advocate for them, securing housing help and refer them to longer-term community supports.
Our commitment to supporting vulnerable families also includes continuing to provide resources for securing permanent housing and job training.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, we are working hard to respond to the changing circumstances and reassess situations through direction we receive from public health experts. We will provide regular updates about our services while ensuring the health and safety of our staff, residents and the community at large.
The women and children we support at the YW struggle with homelessness, hunger, and barriers to employment. They are affected more than ever during this pandemic. Your support will go a long way to help us meet their needs as we work together as a community to get through this.
