Our Mission

Astrid Dance, founded in 1998, is a society for the creation of new dance that fosters innovative research and exploration, broadening the boundaries of creation within the dance milieu. The foundation of this creative structure is based on the ongoing development of an educational process and a commitment to the continued evolution of the art form. Educational initiatives for new dance have included apprenticeships, a mentoring program, residencies and movement research for both professional dancers and initiates to the form. The organization strives to portray essential aspects of the human condition through the medium of dance choreography by creating a potent physical language. Astrid Dance directs its primary focus towards presenting works of art to the public that are highly original and inspire a dialogue between audience and performers. The company seeks to animate activity through a variety of initiatives, community outreach programs, educational and training diversifications and the integration of dance within a number of different mediums.

About ASTRID DANCE SOCIETY

Sarah Chase, artistic director of Astrid Dance since 2009, is a celebrated choreographer and performer. Based in Ontario until 2004, Sarah is now reestablishing herself as an artist in her home province of British Columbia and has taken the helm of the Vancouver-based company. In the last ten years, she has been working predominantly as a solo dance artist presenting her works on tour across Canada and Europe. She has created commissions for Toronto Dance Theatre, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, Andrea Nann and Dreamwalker Dance, Robin Poitras and Ron Stewart, Heidi Strauss and Darryl Tracy, and Montreal Danse. She was the recipient of the Jaqueline Lemiuex Award in 2004.
